Lilly House & Oldfields

Located on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Lilly House and Oldfields are 26 acres of gardens surrounding the former home of J.K. Lilly.  The house itself is a museum (restored to the style of the Lilly family's occupancy during the 1930s), which I've yet to visit, but the Oldfields are good for an afternoon walk.  Good for picnics if you're a romantic type, too.  Best place to start your walk is at the cliff gardens on the hill above the central canal, accessed behind the Lilly House.

.

Oldfields.

Getting there:

by car: From downtown, head North on Meridian Street.  Turn left on 38th street.  Follow 38th to Michigan Road.  Turn right on Michigan.  The museum entrance is nearly immediately on your left.

by bike: Head to the south end of the canal, where the canal joins the White River trail.  Take that up the 30th Street, where you can get on the Central Canal Towpath.  Shortly after you pass under the interstate, you'll see a red bridge.  Cross that and you're on Art Museum grounds.  You can figure out the rest from there.

Costs:

Oldfields are free; tours of the Lilly house are $5.
