Prologue: May 17
90/94 between Chicago and Rockford

The cell phone rang.  "Hey, Dan."

"How's the drive going?"

"I'm hopped up on caffeine pills, so it's going ok."

"You sound chipper."

"I wouldn't say chipper.  Jittery's more like it."

"So where are you, anyway?"

"I dunno.  Somewhere in Illinois, but I'm not really sure where I am in relation to where I want to be."

"Where do you want to be?"

"Wisconsin.  You know about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle?  It's the idea that you can know a lot about the location of an particle or its trajectory, but the more you know about one, the less you know about the other.  Well, I'm so sure of my trajectory, I have no idea where I am at all."

"So what is your trajectory?"

"Go to Wisconsin, turn left.  Hop on a plane and go to Iceland.  But I guess for now it's just go to Wisconsin and head for the first Motel 6 I see.  What time is it anyway?"

"11:30 your time."

"Christ."
